Banbury 2009 Recycle Week started with the new RS Fabrications Battery Recycling Box unveiled outside Morrisons Supermarket.
Designed and manufactured at RS Fabrications, the new box is all steel welded construction with an internel stainless steel collection hopper.
“We went to RS and Russell & Shane designed and produced a prototype battery recycling box, based around Cherwell Councils requirements” stated John Smith from Cherwell “and the finished product is exactly what is required for Cherwell, and the government driven directive for battery recycling”.
RS Fabrications have worked with Cherwell District Council on numerous projects, mostly vehicle related, but have taken this opportunity to design & manufacture a perfect battery recycling unit, subsequently resulting in an order for 30 Units.
“We went ahead and registered the design and obtained a Patent Application Number 0909044.0 for our Battery Waste Collection Recepticle” remarked Russell ” and we will be on Stand 264 for the Recycling & Waste Managment Exhibition at the N.E.C. Birmingham 15-17 September 2009, which we are looking forward to”.
“This Years Recycle Week has the theme ‘Let’s Waste Less’ and I can see these battery Boxes outside every supermarket in the Country, based on the governmet directive for recycling and waste”. commented Shane.
The Government Batteries Directive was laid out in April 2009 establishing producer responsibilites. Directive targets of collecting waste portable batteries are set at 25% of sales by 2012 and 45% by 2016.
“Research shows that the average household uses 21 batteries per year and that around 600 million batteries are sent to landfill every year and the directive is a very challenging target” commented Russell ” the current collection rate is estimated to be around 2.3% per year so with the aid of our collection boxes we hope to improve this number considerably”.
